SHI - Makerspace/STEAM Instructor

Job Summary
The objective of this position is to plan and deliver workshops at and for the SHI Makerspace and to support culturally relevant STEAM instruction within the Juneau School District. The selected candidate will have cultural knowledge related to subsistence and/or NW Coast Arts and experience working with Indigenous youth. The Makerspace/STEAM Instructor will work with the Makerspace and HS Communities of Practice and other Makerspace Instructors to design engaging activities and programming to engage students in culturally relevant hands-on lessons.
Duties/Responsibilities

• Develop and organize innovative Culturally Relevant STEAM programming in the Makerspace with the SHI STEAM Team staff and outside partners.
• Lead workshops and open studio time for Makerspace activities in Juneau
• Support teachers within the Juneau School District in the delivery of culturally relevant STEAM lessons.
• Responsible for adapting and delivering Makerspace activities in communities around SE Alaska.
• Provide guidance for SE Alaska teachers on adapting Makerspace and Culturally Relevant STEAM activities for classroom use

Required Skills

• Knowledge of Southeast Alaska Native culture and Southeast Alaska’s communities
• Experience working with middle and high school youth
• Experience working with Makerspace equipment including laser and vinyl cutters
• Lifelong learner with a passion for creativity and innovation
• Demonstrated effective verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills

Supervisory Responsibility
This position will have no direct reports.
Work Environment
This position’s duties are performed at the Walter Soboleff Building. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets, and fax machines.
Physical Demands
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to verbally communicate. This position is very active and requires standing, walking, bending, kneeling, stooping, crouching, and climbing. The employee must frequently lift and/or move objects up to 20 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move objects up to 50 pounds.
About this Role
This is a full-time benefited position. SHI employees are expected to work during SHI’s regular business hours of 8:00am to 4:30pm Monday to Friday. Additionally, employees may work up to or over 45 hours per week or additional time as needed to meet workload demands or special events such as Celebration.
Regular travel to the SE Communities of Angoon, Craig, Hoonah, Klawock, Sitka, and Wrangell is expected.
Required Education and Experience

• High School Diploma
• Three years of experience supporting youth in a classroom setting
• Experience developing and delivering culturally-relevant lessons

Preferred Education and Experience

• 2 years of professional work in the education
• 5+ years’ experience in a project-related field (e.g. carving, ethnobotany, cooking)

Salary Range: $50,000.00 - $65,000.00
