SHI - Education Language Coordinator

Job Summary
The primary objective of this position is to develop heritage language material and promote inclusive language learning opportunities, which are administered through the Sealaska Heritage Institute (SHI) Education Department; under the direct supervision of the Education Director. Independent judgment is required to plan, prioritize, and organize diversified workload and to recommend changes in relation to program practices and procedures.
Duties/Responsibilities

• Collaborate with language and cultural specialists to develop content for language resources in Haida, Tsimshian, and Tlingit. This includes crafting grant required resources and other printed and online resources.
• Maintain professional relationships with language and cultural specialists and language review committee during the revision and publication process.
• Coordinate with the publications and communications department to design, market, and promote the six children’s books and other resources.
• Develop, maintain, and update an internal inventory of Haida, Tsimshian, and Tlingit language materials at Sealaska Heritage Institute.
• Coordinate partnership and implementation of Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) with Outer Coast College to host annual community language sessions for Haida, Tsimshian, and Tlingit.
• Under the general direction of the Project and Education Director, organize and implement annual lecture series with a focus on a heritage language topics.
• Review language materials and provide translations for internal and external language requests, including coordination of review by proficient speakers.
• Manage available language apps, online dictionary, and other online resources that require consistent maintenance.
• Upload vocabulary to online resources and maintain content as advised.
• Organize recording audio of heritage language speakers.
• Analyze, edit, and level heritage language audio.
• Support and implement the annual healing summer language institute.
• Other duties as assigned.

Required Skills

• Demonstrates effective verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills
• Demonstrates ability to manage multiple projects and activities with attention to detail
• Strong organizational and planning skills in program coordination
• Technical capacity and expertise in using charts, tables, graphs, spreadsheets and databases
• Extensive knowledge of Southeast Alaska Native culture and languages

Supervisory Responsibility
This position will have no direct reports.
Work Environment
This position’s duties are performed at the Walter Soboleff Building off site for programming activities. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets, and fax machines.
Physical Demands
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to verbally communicate. This position is very active and requires standing, walking, bending, kneeling, stooping, crouching, and climbling. The employee must frequently lift and/or move objects up to 20 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move objects up to 50 pounds.
About this Role
This is a full-time temporary non-benefited position. SHI full-time employees are expected to work during SHI’s regular business hours of 8:00am to 4:30pm Monday to Friday. Additionally, employees may work up to or over 45 hours per week or additional time as needed to meet workload demands or special events such as Celebration.
All staff are expected to work as a team for our bi-annual Celebration. This four-day event is a required activity in which all staff participate. Tasks are assigned to staff and staff are expected to attend the event for full days, potentially as long as 12 hours each day.
Required Education and Experience

• Bachelor of Arts or Science Degree in education, language, or project-related field.
• 3 years of professional work in project management and program coordination.

Salary Range: $47,000.00 - $57,000.00
