Sealaska Welcomes Madeline Soboleff Levy

Sealaska welcomes Madeline Soboleff Levy as our new Vice President of Policy and Corporate Affairs. She is Haida of the SGlans Eagle Frog clan and Tlingit of the L’eeneidí Raven Dog Salmon clan, and she is also of Norwegian heritage. She carries the names Gaajuuwaay and Shaa Xei di Tlaa, and resides in Juneau where she and her husband Trinidad Contreras have four children: Sofia, Guillermo, Rocio and Alejandro.
Madeline brings twenty years of experience in American Indian and Alaska Native law and policy, focusing on advancing advocacy, strengthening sovereignty and building solid political and legal foundations for Indigenous communities. Her work has carried her across many policy arenas, yet her connection to Sealaska remained a steady anchor. She served as an intern in the Sealaska Legal Department in 2011 and later as a Board Youth Advisor in 2013. She now returns in a full circle moment that reflects her lasting commitment to strengthening the future of our people through policy and governance.
As Vice President of Policy and Corporate Affairs, Madeline will guide Sealaska’s policy strategy and advance shareholder priorities at the local, state and federal levels. In a resolution adopted Friday, Oct. 30, Sealaska’s board of directors voted to add an additional $2.5 million to its scholarship endowment fund to meet the increased demand for support from students receiving postsecondary education on a part-time basis. Sealaska supports the Sitka Tribe of Alaska (STA) taking legal action against the Alaska State Fish and Game in response to its recently published 2019 herring harvest guidelines. The tribe filed a lawsuit with the Superior Court citing the state for mismanagement of the fishery. The lawsuit seeks to protect the sustainability of herring for future subsistence and traditional gathering.
