Accounting Intern Finds Career Confidence while Connecting with Tlingit Heritage

I have found more grounding and confidence in this field. My accounting internship with Sealaska has been amazing! During the work day I have been assisting with quarterly reconciliations, reconciling shareholder liability accounts, creating logical arguments in Excel to manipulate accounting data, collecting yearly data and using it in the analysis of accounts, entering and tracking investment K-1 data, reviewing the accounts receivable process and recommending enhancements, and understanding and discussing tax issues. The accounting team has been incredibly welcoming and willing to fit this internship to my career interests. I have found more grounding and confidence in this field and cannot wait to apply the tools I have gained in my future.
This internship has been more than debits and credits for me, though. It has been coming home, bonding to my heritage, and a promise to connect with the breadth of life to those in my community, family and traditions. I sincerely hope this video shows how my internship with Sealaska had a holistic impact on my being. Gunalchéesh.

Every year, Sealaska directors select a shareholder descendant to serve a one-year term as the Board Youth Advisor (BYA). Tiadola Silva was selected as the 2021-2022 BYA. In this position, Silva will provide input and gain board membership training and knowledge of Sealaska’s operations. Silva is originally from Angoon and now lives in Juneau. Her parents are Jeremy Martin and Juanita Silva.

Hearts are heavy at Sealaska after the passing of Sealaska director Albert Kookesh, Tlingit leader, former senator, business owner and fierce advocate for Alaska Natives. As walls rapidly go up on the new Mendenhall Valley location of the Glory Hall, Sealaska’s board of directors sent a strong message of support for the initiative by committing $50,000 to the project at its December meeting. Sealaska supports the Sitka Tribe of Alaska (STA) taking legal action against the Alaska State Fish and Game in response to its recently published 2019 herring harvest guidelines. The tribe filed a lawsuit with the Superior Court citing the state for mismanagement of the fishery. The lawsuit seeks to protect the sustainability of herring for future subsistence and traditional gathering.
