Job Title: Computer Science Data Analyst Intern

Location: Lakewood, CO or Remote

Job Summary:

Apply your interest in computer programming, data analysis, and geographic information systems (GIS) to projects on tribal lands this summer. The Computer Science Data Analyst Intern is part of Sealaska’s Managed Business Solutions (MBS) team working on the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) Division of Water and Power. As you work alongside GIS and programming professionals, you will be introduced to a career in GIS analysis and learn key components of a GIS program. The primary initiative you will be supporting during this internship is development of a computer-based water ticketing program to replace handwritten tickets at 17 Irrigation Projects in the Western United States. Water tickets will go through a lifecycle in ArcGIS Survey123 from customer request to scheduling/canal capacity analysis and finally logging water deliveries volume to farmers. Depending on your interests and skills, the team can supply additional projects during the internship.
This internship can be accomplished remotely or at the BIA Office of Trust Services in Lakewood, CO. Throughout the summer, you will visit at least one Native American reservation supported by the team’s efforts. During these site visits, you can meet with local staff to learn about their workflows and mold the development of the digital water ticket system to best support their needs.

Duties/Responsibilities:

• Familiarize yourself with Arcade language used in water ticket logic
• Meet with field staff, learn their day-to-day activities and apply to application being developed
• Configure and test next iteration of the water ticket scheduled for deployment in 2027
• Work with GIS Specialists to learn geospatial analysis skills to perform other duties in support of the Division

Required Skills/Abilities:

• Must be interested in learning about mapping or geographical information systems (GIS)
• Understanding of Excel spreadsheets
• Able to both collaborate with a team and work independently
• Ability to meet deadlines
• Strong written and verbal communication skills
• Must be a Sealaska shareholder, descendant of a shareholder, or spouse of a shareholder
• Legally authorized to work in the United States

Education and Experience:

• Must be currently enrolled in post-secondary school/Codefy program or a recent graduate (1-2 years)
• Must be 18 years old at time of hire

Preferred Skills:

• Possess skills related to basic computer programming (scripting), GIS, databases, HTML, hydrology, hydraulics, engineering, and/or geologic/geotechnical systems.
• At least a 2.5 GPA
• Strong critical thinking and research skills
• Self-starter with ability to adapt to a fast-paced work environment

Work Environment:
