#NativeEnough Discussion Series Dives Deep on Blood Quantum

Sealaska hosted its second in the “#NativeEnough” series of virtual events centered on the issue of blood quantum Tuesday night, Oct. 26.
The purpose of the event was to provide background on blood quantum – how it was incorporated into the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act, its history related to enrollment requirements at Sealaska, what tribes and other Alaska Native Corporations require, cultural values related to the
issue, a glimpse into what the population of Sealaska shareholders and descendants looks like in the future, and answers to questions from participants.

Speakers at the Tuesday, Oct. 26 event include President Richard Peterson, Central Council of the Tlingit and Haida Indian Tribes of Alaska; Sealaska directors Nicole Hallingstad and Morgan Howard; Sealaska President and CEO Anthony Mallott; and Sealaska VP of Policy and Legal Affairs and Corporate Secretary Jaeleen Kookesh.
The discussion continues on Sealaska social media channels throughout the fall. The third event in the series, a panel discussion featuring voices from outside Sealaska, is slated for Wednesday, Nov. 17 from 6-7:30 p.m. Additional details will be shared on social media and in an upcoming eNews.

As walls rapidly go up on the new Mendenhall Valley location of the Glory Hall, Sealaska’s board of directors sent a strong message of support for the initiative by committing $50,000 to the project at its December meeting. In a resolution adopted Friday, Oct. 30, Sealaska’s board of directors voted to add an additional $2.5 million to its scholarship endowment fund to meet the increased demand for support from students receiving postsecondary education on a part-time basis. On Friday, March 29, Sealaska will announce the 2019 spring distribution. More than 20,000 shareholders will benefit from the dividend payment from operations and the Marjorie V. Young Permanent Fund. Many of our family members are considering enrolling or are in the process. SEALASKA STOCK ENROLLMENT PROCESS IS 100% ONLINE The enrollment process was recently simplified, eliminating notarization requirements. Applicants can now take a picture and upload supporting documents on the MySealaska.com online application. Supporting documents include birth certificate, Certificate of Indian Blood, and potentially parents’ or grandparents’ birth certificates.
