One of the few remaining birth speakers of the Northern Haida dialect of Xaad kíl, Jane Kristovich (K’ujúuhl), joined her ancestors on August 18, 2021 at the age of 93. In a resolution adopted Friday, Oct. 30, Sealaska’s board of directors voted to add an additional $2.5 million to its scholarship endowment fund to meet the increased demand for support from students receiving postsecondary education on a part-time basis. Sealaska is sad to announce the passing of longtime director Marjorie (Marge) V. Young from Craig, Alaska. Marge served on the board from 1979 to 2009 and held positions as chair and vice chair during her years of service. Marge was a successful business owner in her hometown of Craig. Sealaska supports the Sitka Tribe of Alaska (STA) taking legal action against the Alaska State Fish and Game in response to its recently published 2019 herring harvest guidelines. Soboleff’s passing in early July created a vacancy on the thirteen-member board. According to Sealaska corporate bylaws and the Alaska State law, the board has an obligation to fill vacancies. “Out of respect for Director Soboleff and his family, the board is deferring action on filling the vacancy until Sealaska’s fall board meeting in September,” said Sealaska Board Chair Joe Nelson.

Sealaska’s new shareholder bereavement benefit is now known as Deishú Memorial Fund. Deishú roughly translates to “the beginning and the end of the road, eternal journey” in Tlingit.
