Sealaska Policy Efforts Highlighted in Lunch Hour Forum

One of the important ways Sealaska serves shareholders and communities is advocating for Native rights and issues. The work takes place at the local, state, and federal level on behalf of shareholders, Indigenous people nationwide and traditional communities.
Sealaska leadership provided an overview of current policy and advocacy efforts during a virtual Policy Forum held Tuesday, April 5, 2022.
Sealaska director and policy committee chair, Wáahlaal Gíidaak (Barbara Blake) provided an overview of the committee that is formally known as Naxtoo.aat / Wayi Wah / Hágwsdaa. The committee’s purpose in short is to review and make recommendations to the board on annual public policy priorities.
The policy forum began with recognition of the late Congressman Don Young.

About a month before his passing, he held a round table in DC on ANCSA a round table with his colleagues. He was one of 400 in congress, but everyone knew him. A memorial totem pole honoring Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls and Two Spirits (MMIWG2S) was recently raised near Klawock. This beautiful, heartbreaking tribute is the result of a sensitive collaboration, and was dedicated to Judylee Guthrie, who was murdered by her partner in 2016. In a resolution adopted Friday, Oct. 30, Sealaska’s board of directors voted to add an additional $2.5 million to its scholarship endowment fund to meet the increased demand for support from students receiving postsecondary education on a part-time basis. Sealaska is sad to announce the passing of longtime director Marjorie (Marge) V. Young from Craig, Alaska. Marge served on the board from 1979 to 2009 and held positions as chair and vice chair during her years of service. Marge was a successful business owner in her hometown of Craig. Former Sealaska intern now administers Sealaska’s carbon program. “As an intern, I was part of a team that included the U.S. Forest Service and Hoonah Indian Association,” said Mitch. “Together, we conducted stream surveys to identify fish passage obstacles for Coho salmon in areas surrounding Hoonah.” One hundred years from now, Mitch Haldane’s work will be part of Sealaska’s past.

Sealaska supports the Sitka Tribe of Alaska (STA) taking legal action against the Alaska State Fish and Game in response to its recently published 2019 herring harvest guidelines. Soboleff’s passing in early July created a vacancy on the thirteen-member board. According to Sealaska corporate bylaws and the Alaska State law, the board has an obligation to fill vacancies. “Out of respect for Director Soboleff and his family, the board is deferring action on filling the vacancy until Sealaska’s fall board meeting in September,” said Sealaska Board Chair Joe Nelson.

Sealaska’s new shareholder bereavement benefit is now known as Deishú Memorial Fund. Deishú roughly translates to “the beginning and the end of the road, eternal journey” in Tlingit.
