Sealaska Board Targets Fall Meeting for Vacant Board Seat Action

Sealaska directors began its summer board meeting with a moment of silence observing the passing of Ross Soboleff, a Sealaska board member since 2014.
Soboleff’s passing in early July created a vacancy on the thirteen-member board. According to Sealaska corporate bylaws and the Alaska State law, the board has an obligation to fill vacancies.
“Out of respect for Director Soboleff and his family, the board is deferring action on filling the vacancy until Sealaska’s fall board meeting in September,” said Sealaska Board Chair Joe Nelson. “Director Soboleff skillfully led a board governance reform effort, that embraced a philosophy of continuous improvement. Over the last couple of years, his calm and deliberate leadership style guided the board through a number of difficult conversations that ultimately resulted in a number of meaningful improvements in how the board works together to accomplish its goals.”
The board will meet September 6-7, 2018.

The discovery of oil on Alaska’s North Slope, along with other natural resources the government sought to develop, led to an urgency on the part of state and federal lawmakers to secure land ownership. One of the few remaining birth speakers of the Northern Haida dialect of Xaad kíl, Jane Kristovich (K’ujúuhl), joined her ancestors on August 18, 2021 at the age of 93.
