Happy Dr. Walter Soboleff Day! Today, we recognize the remarkable life and tremendous legacy of Kaajaakwtí Dr. Walter Soboleff, reflecting on one of his most important guiding principles: Sh yáa.awudanéiyi a kwáan – respect people; respect yourself; and other people will respect you.
A lifelong Lingít speaker, minister and public servant, Soboleff served on the Sealaska board for nine years. He was Tlingit of the Raven, L’eeneidí (Dog Salmon) clan. A quietly powerful advocate for Alaska Native people, Soboleff taught language and cultural values wherever he went. He was an educator; a scholar; a spiritual leader and champion for our traditional languages. He also worked tirelessly to advance Native civil rights.
We remember his wisdom, loving spirit and humility, and take inspiration from his dedication to culture and community — today and always.

Soboleff’s passing in early July created a vacancy on the thirteen-member board. Sealaska’s new shareholder bereavement benefit is now known as Deishú Memorial Fund. Deishú roughly translates to “the beginning and the end of the road, eternal journey” in Tlingit.
