It has been 40 years since Tlingit, Haida and Tsimshian Elders convened in 1980 to discuss the importance of preserving our culture to benefit future generations. The resulting text of that meeting, “Because We Cherish You,” laid out the Elders’ vision for maintaining our way of life and passing it on to our grandchildren. The anniversary of that momentous gathering gave us renewed cause to reflect the direction they provided, and as a result, “Because We Cherish You” became the theme of much of Sealaska’s work this year.
As the year comes to a close, we invite you to view some of our favorite videos from 2020, which highlight the concept of cherishing future generations and our shared heritage. This commitment is realized every day in the actions we take that positively impact our shareholders, our communities and our businesses.

In a resolution adopted Friday, Oct. 30, Sealaska’s board of directors voted to add an additional $2.5 million to its scholarship endowment fund to meet the increased demand for support from students receiving postsecondary education on a part-time basis. Sealaska just started providing scholarships to part-time students for the 2019–2020 academic year, and the demand was significant.

Soboleff’s passing in early July created a vacancy on the thirteen-member board.
