U.S. Army Staff Sergeant Presents Sealaska a Flag Flown “in the face of the enemy”

Sealaska shareholder and Staff Sergeant Bryant Bearfield has been serving in the U.S. Army for 13 years. Bearfield presented Sealaska with a U.S. flag flown at an American base for one day. Bearfield says he was inspired after watching veterans being honored on Sealaska’s social media channel.
The U.S. flag was flown on June 15–16, 2019, in the face of the enemy at Contingency Location Dwyer, Afghanistan, an American military base. As the flag flew, it symbolized the sovereign power of the USA and the steadfast resolve to keep our country safe.
Staff Sergeant Bearfield is Tlingit, Eagle, Wolf. We are honored to receive this flag and sincerely thank Staff Sgt. Bearfield for his service.

One of the few remaining birth speakers of the Northern Haida dialect of Xaad kíl, Jane Kristovich (K’ujúuhl), joined her ancestors on August 18, 2021 at the age of 93. Kristovich was a treasured speaker of Xaad kíl who gave her time and knowledge generously to generations of her people through her involvement with language and dance groups, community events and even on film.

Sealaska shareholders approved a resolution to establish a settlement trust for Sealaska by a margin greater than three to one during the election that concluded Saturday, June 26. Hearts are heavy at Sealaska after the passing of Sealaska director Albert Kookesh, Tlingit leader, former senator, business owner and fierce advocate for Alaska Natives. As walls rapidly go up on the new Mendenhall Valley location of the Glory Hall, Sealaska’s board of directors sent a strong message of support for the initiative by committing $50,000 to the project at its December meeting. Sealaska supports the Sitka Tribe of Alaska (STA) taking legal action against the Alaska State Fish and Game in response to its recently published 2019 herring harvest guidelines. The tribe filed a lawsuit with the Superior Court citing the state for mismanagement of the fishery. The lawsuit seeks to protect the sustainability of herring for future subsistence and traditional gathering.
